Kirtland Community College Firebirds MCCAA Conference Play Underway (January 18)
The Kirtland Community College (KCC) basketball teams began MCCAA conference action in January and both women's and men's standings are included below. Kirtland Community College Lady Firebirds Fall to Owens (January 4)
The Lady Firebirds basketball team lost to Owens Community College on Dec. 30th by a score of 74-44, bringing their record to 5-5 overall. The Firebirds fell behind early when they could not break Owens' press. The Firebirds came out strong in the second half, but were still outscored 26-22. Leading the Firebirds were Brooke Arnold with 12 points, six rebounds and three assists. Cassie Ryckman contributed eight points, four rebounds, one block, and one assist. Melinda Dunkel was two for three from three-point range and contributed six points. Josie Wiltse and Tasha Crouse had five points each, while Abbye Gulvas and Kim Dunn added four points apiece. KCC Basketball Standout Joins Harlem Ambassadors (December 13)
Former Kirtland Community College (KCC) Firebirds basketball player Nick Simpson (Bay City) is now a member of the Harlem Ambassadors basketball troupe. The Harlem Ambassadors deliver motivational messages and show-stopping performances at school assemblies and charity basketball games to support local organizations such as Boys and Girls Club, Kiwanis, Red Cross and Optimist Clubs throughout the western United States. The Ambassadors are not affiliated with the Harlem Globetrotters.
KCC Lady Firebirds Take Two in Oppy Tournament (December 1)
The Lady Firebirds performed an incredible feat during the Thanksgiving weekend Oppy Tourney by winning two basketball games with only two hours of rest between games. The Firebirds put forth a solid showing beating Alma's JV Scots 70-53 and the Mid-Michigan Lady Lakers 64-49.
KCC Basketball Teams Top MCCAA Standings (November 28)
The Kirtland Community College (KCC) basketball teams currently top the MCCAA basketball standings, with both the men's and women's team sporting unbeaten non-conference records. Conference action will begin in January.
KCC Mens Basketball Now 3-0 (November 23)
The Kirtland Community College (KCC) men's basketball team made it three wins in a row upsetting Northwood's JV by a score of 69-64 to remain unbeaten. Coach Ty McGregor summarized the victory by saying, “Bottom line is, we won ugly. We struggled shooting from the field and missed 16 free throws. The season is young, but we must continue to get better and sharpen our basketball IQs.â€
KCC's Brown Posts Impressive Showing at National Championship (November 17)
Titus Brown of Fairview finished a successful season by competing at the NJCAA National Cross-Country Championship in Hobbs, New Mexico. Brown posted an impressive time of 28:42.58 over the 8K course, finishing Nationals in 91st place out of a field of 355 total runners. A winning time of 25:22.08 was posted by Kemoy Campbell of South Plains College of Texas, only 3 minutes and 21 seconds ahead of Brown. Within our own the MCCAA Conference, Brown finished 12th out of a field of 30 qualifying runners.
KCC Firebirds Put Up Another Strong Showing (November 14)
The Kirtland Community College (KCC) men's basketball team improve their 2011-12 record to 2-0 after swamping Fleming College of Ontario 62-37 in a game played on Rochester College's home court. The ‘Birds won this game with a tenacious, aggressive and efficient defense. Athletic Director Richard Silverman says, “This is the kind of defense this team is going to have to play if we are going to be successful against the more talented teams in the MCCAA East. The Firebirds face some offensive challenges and will have to work hard to score points.â€
